Dr O'Colmain has a special interest in Sports Medicine and has a qualification from the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (Glasgow) as well as being a Fellow of the Sports and Exercise Faculty of the RCSI (Dublin).
He is on the FAI panel of doctors for the underage International teams. He attends regular meetings of the FAI medical and scientific group and provides updates on anti-doping issues (see below)
He is team doctor to FAI Schools (FAIS) men's team U-18
He has recently retired as the team doctor to Galway United FC and its Academy.
He has also worked with the GAA and the Galway Senior football team as doctor.
